3 Takeaways from the Marvel Cinematic Universe for Content Marketing

Hi everyone!

Who here likes to follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Meee!

I wrote this article after watching 2 episodes of Ms. Marvel on Disney Plus, which of course also went through the process of watching dozens of films before that since 2008, when the Iron Man film was first released.

For a moment, I thought, how can a brand release so many products in the form of films and series over a long period of time (long in the context of film) and still be able to attract viewers to remain loyal and even continue to emerge.

From this question, I tried to explore what could make Marvel get here with its MCU?

Then can we apply these things to our products or brands for Content Marketing?

Finally, I got three takeaways from MCU. What are they?

1. Creating a Content Bank

Create Content Bank
Seems like I’ve seen this monster, but in which movie?

If we observe, every film and series from MCU always has continuity.

For example, the latest MCU film, Dr. Strange: Multiverse of Madness, is directly related to the series WandaVision and What If. Even some characters often appear in several films so that they are connected to each other from one film to another.

So, therefore, when we design a content strategy, we should connect several contents into one connection.

This will make the audience interested in diving deeper into the topic they are watching and learning.

Not only that, of course, if there is a connection to each other, this will also help the SEO of your page to quickly rank up, right?

2. Increase the number of content formats

now it’s time to watch Ms Marvel, while lying down of course (hopefully I’m not falling asleep)

What do you think of MCU movies?

Fun cinema movies? Colorful movies? Full of action scenes?

All of that is true, right?

But increasingly, MCU is not just about that.

Since 2020, MCU has begun to explore other platforms besides cinemas to reach audiences, through streaming shows with the Digital Streaming format on Disney Plus. Through streaming shows, we can also enjoy MCU series without having to go to the cinema.

Even because of the serial format, the story can be explored more because of the longer duration. Something that is rather difficult to achieve for films with an average duration of 120 minutes.

In addition, MCU also started making films and series with different genres.

There are coming-of-age genres like Spider-Man and Ms. Marvel, science fiction films like Iron Man, and horror films like Dr. Strange Multiverse of Madness.

The variety of genres and formats from MCU makes them able to reach more audiences from various circles.

3. Building connections with storytelling

Surely many of you here who watch MCU movies also wait until the end to see the post-credit scene.

How come you are so patient? Hahaha

I honestly don’t feel patient, I’d rather run out to pee.

But somehow I always sit glued to wait for the post-credit scene to find out what other stories will be connected to the next movie, which sometimes doesn’t meet my expectations (this includes the last scene in the MoM movie, damn it if I remember!)

Well, of course this could not be achieved if there was no connection between MCU and the audience.

The post-credit scene that becomes the connection for the next film, and also the film that mixes the audience’s emotions in it. Happy, lonely (I feel you, Spidey), desperate, love, whatever it is, makes the audience more “invested” in the films from MCU. In the end, it all boils down to the storytelling of the film’s characters.

Our audience is the same as us, still human.

Humans also like stories.

So tell the story of our struggles that relate to them, tell that we also feel the same as them.

The same connection will make the audience pay attention to us; whether it’s engaging, telling about us again, or even possibly buying our products.

Conclusion

Well, that’s all about what takeaways we can get from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Indeed, Marvel itself already has the strength of its products and fanbase, but the success of MCU might not be achieved if it does not use the right marketing techniques.
